Many of the DD51s of the 800 series, which were introduced for freight use, were inherited by JR Freight when JNR was privatized, and the Aichi Locomotive Depot continued to use the same type until 2021.

The Aichi Locomotive Depot's DD51s were mainly used on the Kansai Main Line, and in winter, oil transport freight trains with longer formations and freight trains operated on the Kisei Main Line were sometimes operated in multiple units, and various combinations of DD51s were seen.
